Highlander smashers land quarter finals

With great teamwork and heavy bashes, elementary boys of the Cordillera Administrative Region pounded their rivals with three wins out of five matches against the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) in the table tennis team sports held at the Philippines Science High School, San Ildefonso, Ilocos Sur, April 16. Fearless fighter Albino Ponhed bashed Ahmed Bryant Abdul (ARMM) in the singles B match with the set scores, 11-7, 7-11, 11-7, and 11-0. Two singles relay match then salvaged the team when doubles Johert Lachaona and Elvis Jermin Gonzales failed to rally against Datu AhmedZadar Banion and Porqan Sallabbi. Remcy Adong bounced back in the nail-bitter first singles relay match with three wins and a set score of 11-8, 8-11, 11-8, 7-11, and 11-8. Ponhed, concluded the game in the last singles relay with three wins and a set score of 11-4, 9-11,11-8, and 11-8. Unfortunately, the tables turned for the team when they played against defending champion Metro Manila Stalwarts in the semi-finals. In spite of this, coach Florencio D. Puguon Jr expressed a positive vibe and said that the team put out a good fight. He then explained that the lack of good facilities and the lack of unity training may have contributed to the loss of the team. “Ti makitak nga problema dita ket jay rubber ti rackets da ket obsolete en piman ta iti nagatang da lang nga sarili da nga racket ket jay kalakaan ngem mayat en nga racket nga agbanor ti P2,500,” Puguon explained. “Ken maysa pay ket kailangan kuma ngay ti unity training ta kurang jay five days nga nag trainingan ti uubbing ket ag-gapo da pay ti agduduma nga provinces. Ada ti magapo Kalinga, Apayao ken Ifugao,” Puguon added./ Diane Mae Abbugao
